On Wednesday, July 22, 2020, the exclusive preview of the photo exhibition entitled “The Watch” took place in the atrium of the Benaki Museum /138 Piraeos Street during the Efkranti 2020 Awards event. The exhibition featured photos submitted to the international photography competition organized for the second consecutive year by Isalos.net (the Naftika Chronika educational initiative for young people in shipping). The title and theme of the exhibition were inspired by the homonymous novel by Nikos Kavvadias (AGRA publications). The competition aimed at creating a fruitful dialogue between the past and the present of Greek and international shipping by showing how much shift-duty and the conditions of life at sea have changed in the past decades. To this end, entrants were invited to submit snapshots from their daily shift on a ship’s bridge, engine room, or deck, captured through the lens of their cameras or their mobile phones.
The photos presented at the exhibition preview were selected by a jury of arts and letters personalities as well as art lovers from the maritime community. The fifteen-member committee included Mmes. Kitsa Aggelakou, Eleni Athanassiou, Christina Androulidaki, Marina Vernikou, Suzana Laskaridi, Eirini Daifa, Rhea Papadopoulou, Olympia Pappa, and Messrs. Tim Childe, Nikos Vatopoulos, Michalis Gelasakis, Giorgis Gerolympos, Vassilis Bakolitas, Athanasios Polychronopoulos, and Stamos I. Fafalios.
The “Watch” exhibition, curated by art historian Dr. Maria Sardi, was scheduled to take place as part of the Posidonia 2020 Exhibition. However, due to the cancellation of this international maritime exhibition, guests invited to the Efkranti 2020 Awards were given the opportunity to attend an exclusive digital preview and see all the photos of the competition before the start of the Efkranti 2020 Awards event. Dr. Sardi also presented a brief overview of the evolution of shift conditions onboard a ship from the beginning of the 20th century until today, drawing information from the rich archival material of Naftika Chronika magazine.
The preview of the exhibition was made possible thanks to the support of Quilter Cheviot Investment Management (lead sponsor of the exhibition), Wallem International (premium sponsor), and Polyeco Group (sponsor). The winner and runner-up won a 5-night stay at the 5-Star Blue Lagoon Village and Blue Lagoon Ocean hotels in Kos, respectively, sponsored by the Blue Lagoon Group. Celestyal Cruises offered a five-day cruise to the winner of the third prize.
The first prize was awarded to Second Mate Ilias Iliopoulos, the second to Capt. A Merchant Navy, Eleftherios Makris, and the third prize to Mr. Ioannis Ypsilantis, Systems Administrator at Enesel SA.
* We warmly thank Mrs. Angela-Loukia Kavvadia and AGRA publications for kindly granting us the right to use the title “The Watch” from the homonymous novel of N. Kavvadias.
