DNV – BLASTING & COATING ACTIVITIES / CORROSION CONTROLS

11 July 2023 @ 10:00 - 12 July 2023 @ 16:00

DNV Seminars

DNV’s Maritime Academy Hellas is offering on 11 and 12 July 2023 a course on blasting and coating activities as well as corrosion controls.

Participants will be given detailed information of how to organize and to carry out effectively the main and the auxiliary works for blasting / coating, plus for corrosion controls, by cooperating effectively and with their company’s own ways and methods both with the Shipyard and the paints’ suppliers / Experts. The course is supplemented with proper photos and case studies with good and bad examples (i.e. what to apply and what to avoid, respectively).

Focus Points in detail:

1) Grit blasting of the new plates and profiles (for new-buildings and repairs) and the main topics for checks / controls by the Owners’ painting Inspectors / Superintendents.

2) Description of the “vapor barrier” for the protection of painted paints and profiles, regarding the humidity penetration due to the deposited salts on the steel surface.

3) Details for the chemical, physical and grain analysis (by an experienced laboratory) and checking of the sandblasting material for contained salts and heavy metals, plus the conclusions with regard to the recommendations of the paints’ suppliers. Similar analysis for the fresh water, as to be used either for the cleaning of blasted surfaces, or for hydro-jetting.

4) Description of the «Bresle / salt test», what its use and how / when it is carried out. Maximum allowable concentration of salts on the blasting surfaces to comply with the different limits / recommendations of the paints’ suppliers.

5) Description of the efficient galvanizing works for the piping systems of vessel’s circuits and criteria to be applied for proper galvanizing works, plus description of the checking points / inspections (before and after installation onboard).

6) The main galvanizing stages and works of a modern galvanizing workshop, plus the main phases of galvanizing process: description of the main parameters / topics to be checked before the acceptance of the respective galvanized pipes and of other steel outfit.

7) Description of the cathodic protection of the hull structure, either through sacrificial anodes, or through an appropriate «Impressed Current Cathodic Protection» system (ICCP), plus protection of sea chests by using «MGPS».

8) Description and comparisons of modern types of vessel’s antifouling systems, their main categories and how they operate.

9) Description and comparisons of modern paints for the anti-corrosive protection of the steel structure and definition of their proper application. Description and use of the respective terms: “dump tolerant”, “surface tolerant”, “abrasion resistant” and “grain fitted” epoxy paints.

10) Proper procedures for the painting of cargo tanks, cargo holds, ballast tanks, etc and recommendations for the effective paints’ application and how to avoid problems and defects.

11) Cooperation of company staff with the paints’ Makers and their briefing about possible “Owners’ benefits” both for the newbuildings and drydockings. Analysis and use of the “Contract Award Letter”, with the objectives to ensure reliable and effective cooperation between the shipping companies and the paints’ Makers.

12) Details for the effective cooperation with the Experts / Service Engineers of the paints’ Makers: Checking of their experiences and training, plus their certification as per FROSIO / NACE, plus analysis of duties and responsibilities of the paints’ Experts.

13) The particularities of the painting work (during drydockings / repairs), in conjunction with precautions to be applied for effective painting and proper surface preparations / blasting.

14) Description and use of the specialized silicon paints, their particularities and related advantages and disadvantages, plus efforts / results to paint propellers with silicon type coats.

15) The guaranteed performance of the applied paints as to be granted to Owners by the respective Makers, for the vessel’s antifouling systems, plus analysis of the related exclusions (conclusions to be drawn upon the comparisons of paragraphs describing the guaranteed performance, as described by different paints’ Makers).

16) Analysis and use of different checklists and precautions for the proper / effective / controlled cooperation of the Owners’ representatives with the respective Yard (either for newbuildings or for existing vessels) and definitions of specific terms for the paints, such as: “batch number”, “pot life”, “safe storage conditions”, “DFT / WFT”, “inter-coating intervals”, “Product Data Sheets”, etc

Who should attend: Technical and Marine Superintendents and Port Captains occupied on permanent basis with daily paints maintenance, or occasionally through a series of planned repairs and coatings (i.e. during various drydockings, repairs, conversions, retrofittings, etc mainly in various Far Eastern Shipyards).

Trainer: Mr Dimos Iliopoulos,   Naval Architect and Marine Engineer, DNV’s Maritime Academy Trainer.
